For years, opting out of drinking meant sparkling water, a polite excuse, and the quiet resignation that nothing in your glass was worth talking about.
But today's zero-proof spirits are built around real botanical distillates and natural flavours, and the best ones genuinely hold up in a cocktail glass. Here's what's changed in the world of alcohol-free spirits in the last few years...
The last 10 years have been huge for alcohol-free spirits.
The biggest shift is from simple substitutes for alcoholic drinks to sophisticated, purpose-made spirits designed to deliver a proper cocktail experience without the alcohol.
Rewind to 2015, you had a very limited choice and the offerings were mainly around gin. Flavours didn't really taste like gin though - more like herbal water. Texture was unconvincing and the spirits felt a little "thin". They weren't a category in their own right, but more of an add-on aimed at drivers, pregnant people or Dry January participants.
But then, as more people decided to opt out of drinking and focus on health and wellbeing, the category exploded. In the UK, Drinkaware reported in October 2025 that 44% of drinkers moderated their alcohol intake using alcohol-free or low-alcohol drinks, up from 31% in 2018. This shift has forced alcohol-free spirits to evolve quickly, becoming a taste experience in their own right and not just a substitute.
Most zero-proof spirits are built on botanical distillates, extracts, and natural ingredients steeped or separately distilled in water, and over the last 10 years brands have played with that mix to nail the flavour. They're then blended with acids, bitterness agents, and sometimes texture agents such as plant gums to replicate the mouthfeel that ethanol naturally provides.
That layering process is what separates a convincing alcohol-free spirit from a flat one. It's rarely a single ingredient that makes the difference; it's the construction. And this construction has been improving year on year.
Quality usually hinges on the botanical source, whether artificial sweeteners are papering over thin flavour, and whether the product was designed for mixing or just standalone sipping. Check the ingredients list before you buy anything.

- Juniper and classic gin botanicals, suit tonic serves and G&Ts
- Citrus and aromatic profiles, work across long drinks
- Warm spice and oak, deliver depth closest to a whisky-style pour
- Bitter aperitif styles built on gentian, suit spritz builds and Negroni-adjacent drinks
- Fruit-forward expressions, the most approachable, pairing well with cola or ginger beer
CleanCo's Clean G is an award-winning example of what this category can do. Built on juniper, angelica root, coriander, lemon, orange, grapefruit, rosemary, and lavender, it delivers refreshing citrus, juniper, and botanical notes leading into a clean herbaceous finish. No artificial sweeteners, naturally low calorie, and multiple accolades including a Great Taste Gold in 2024 and an IWSC Gold confirm it as a serious player. It's made for cocktails, not the shelf and is delicious over ice as a stand alone beverage.
For broader market context: Tanqueray 0.0% took the 2026 Low and No Taste Master award, with bright lime, citrus, and juniper that performs particularly well under tonic. Sipsmith FreeGlider brings a spicy-citrus body that holds up well when diluted. Everleaf Forest sits closer to the aperitif-botanical end, opening sweet with earthy bitterness and a complex finish, Good Housekeeping scored it 91/100, and its saffron, gentian, citrus blossom, and vanilla profile makes it more of a botanical sipper than a straight gin substitute. Across these options and others, the non-alcoholic spirits market has never offered more genuine choice at this end of the flavour spectrum.
CleanCo's Clean R is the anchor recommendation in this category. Tasting notes run through caramel, apricot, and vanilla before landing on a spiced, warming finish, underpinned by star anise, ginger, sweet orange, cassia bark, pimento, and cinnamon. A Great Taste Gold in 2023 and a San Francisco World Spirits Award Gold back that up.
Elsewhere: Sober Spirits Rum 0.0% came out of the 2026 Low and No Masters judging with notes of balanced sweetness and astringency. Caleño Dark and Spicy brings pineapple, coconut, ginger, and warming spice, better with cola or ginger beer than in spirit-forward builds. Lyre's White Cane offers tropical guava, fermenting mango, and cooked banana notes at 0.0% ABV.
CleanCo's Italian Spritz is a newcomer but going down a hit with tasters.
It's bittersweet, citrus-led, and built for spritz-style occasions. Crafted using carefully selected natural ingredients, our Clean Cocktails are alcohol-free, sugar-free and calorie-free, delivering all the flavour and refreshment of your favourite cocktails, with zero compromise on taste.

Not every classic translates perfectly without ethanol. The formats that work best are those where the base spirit's flavour is strong enough to survive dilution.
G&Ts work because tonic adds bitterness and carbonation to carry the gin through. Old Fashioned-style serves need smoke, oak, or malt notes to carry the format. Rum and Tequila can also work really well as they carry targeted botanicals and warming spices that create a like for like flavour. Go in with that understanding and you'll avoid disappointment.
The CleanCo G&T: 50ml Clean G over a glass packed with ice, topped with a premium tonic, finished with a slice of cucumber or a wedge of pink grapefruit. The citrus and juniper botanicals work with the tonic's bitterness rather than against it. Simple to build, and consistently crisp.
The CleanCo Dark and Stormy-style: 50ml Clean R, ginger beer, a squeeze of fresh lime, and ice. Build over ice, taste as you go, and adjust the ginger beer to your preference. The spiced notes in Clean R pair naturally with ginger's heat; the lime keeps the whole thing sharp and stops it reading sweet.
The Negroni-inspired build: Clean G, non-alcoholic vermouth and bitter orange creates a rich and complex aperitivo that’s perfect for sipping.
Use a 50ml measure as your base and always add ice before the spirit. Taste as you build. Don't over-sweeten. Zero-proof spirits don't carry ethanol's natural warmth, so a dash of quality bitters or a citrus twist can do a lot of the work on texture and finish. Keep it simple and adjust from there.

The "no hangover" claim holds for genuine 0.0% products. Removing ethanol greatly reduces the main mechanisms behind unpleasant mornings, acetaldehyde production, dehydration, and disrupted sleep architecture. That said, other factors such as mixer sugar content or individual sensitivities can still produce adverse effects in some people, so results will vary. CleanCo have built low calorie, low sugar options so you don't get any of that nasty sugar headache you've worked so hard to avoid.
One detail worth knowing: labelling thresholds for "alcohol-free" vary by jurisdiction, with some countries permitting up to around 0.5% ABV under that description, check current UK-specific guidance if this distinction matters to you. Genuine 0.0% products remove that grey area entirely.
CleanCo's full range sits at 0.0% ABV, which is a straightforward buying point if you want certainty. On calories: a 50ml serving of CleanCo contains around 6 calories, compared to approximately 110 calories in a standard 40% spirit, roughly 95% fewer calories per serve before a mixer touches the glass.
The occasions are broader than people assume. Dry January, Sober October, pregnancy, designated driving, post-workout recovery, midweek nights when the next morning matters. These aren't edge cases; they're ordinary situations where a well-made zero-proof drink makes a straightforward choice easier. The point isn't deprivation. It's having something in your glass that you actually want to drink, with no trade-off on quality.

Check ABV first: 0.0% versus up to 0.5% is a meaningful difference depending on your reasons for choosing an alcohol free spirit. Then check for artificial sweeteners. Natural flavours and genuine botanical distillates cost more to produce, and that's usually reflected in the end result. CleanCo's formulations use natural ingredients with no artificial sweeteners, which is what separates a convincing cocktail base from a sweet workaround.
The market has produced a genuine range of alcohol-free spirits worth drinking. The gap between a well-made zero-proof cocktail and the alcoholic version has narrowed to the point where drinking clean isn't second best. However, choosing the right alcohol-free spirit is definitely important. Choosing the right bottle comes down to knowing your cocktail, checking the label for what's actually in it, and adjusting to your personal preference.
