Today, Gin is a favourite spirit around the world, but did you know that it was really the British that made this spirit iconic?
Originating from Holland in the 17th century, gin was initially created as a medicinal elixir known as "genever." It was believed to treat various ailments, thanks to the botanicals and juniper berries infused in it. It wasn't long before this medicine of the time was transported to the UK, where a gin craze in the 18th century really took off.
During this period, gin was consumed in vast quantities, and its popularity only grew as distillation techniques improved and the spirit became more refined. Whilst it wasn't actually good for health, often nicknamed "mother's ruin", the perception was that this delicious tonic could cure ailments and boost vitality.
It's popularity grew, and in the early 19th century the "gin and tonic" was born out of necessity when British soldiers in India mixed gin with tonic water to make the bitter taste of quinine more palatable. Quinine was used to prevent malaria, and was an essential for the soldiers to ward off disease. Hence, gin has always been entwined with medicinal uses (although today we know that gin is, sadly, not a health tonic).
The Prohibition era in the United States further fuelled the creativity of bartenders, leading to the invention of numerous gin-based cocktails. Speakeasies flourished, and gin's versatility made it the perfect base for concoctions that masked the harsh flavours of illicitly produced spirits. Today, gin continues to inspire mixologists around the world, with its botanical complexity providing endless possibilities for innovative and delectable cocktails. From the vibrant nightlife of London to the chic bars of New York, gin remains a timeless favourite, celebrated for its rich history and endless versatility.
